Have you heard of low-level light therapy? This alternative healing modality, also known as phototherapy or LED light therapy, is phenomenal for helping soothe acne, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, alleviate muscle and joint pain and much more. Read on to discover more about low-level light therapy and how to start enjoying the many benefits yourself! What is Low-Level Light Therapy? Simply put, low-level light therapy (LLLT) is the practice of applying measured and specific wavelengths of light to the skin in order to achieve various therapeutic benefits. Low-level light therapy is a safe, non-invasive and pain-free way of reenergizing cells that have become stagnant due to illness, natural aging and environmental factors. Benefits of Low-Level Light Therapy There's a wide variety of benefits that a person can experience from LLLT. And that's one of the big reasons we love it so much! LLLT is used today on skin conditions like acne and to smooth wrinkles and reduce hyperpigmentation. Additionally, it's used to relieve minor muscle, joint and nerve pain and promote healing in wounds and bruising. Low-level light therapy devices have been cleared by the FDA and shown to promote healthy cellular activity, which in turn:
Some of the reasons and conditions people turn to low-level light therapy include:
Light energy passes through the skin without causing damage to penetrate cells at varying depths. LLLT devices are made with LED lights and are considered extremely low risk. There’s no recovery time needed and you can jump right back into your normal day-to-day activities following a session. How Does Low-Level Light Therapy Work? When you use a LLLT device, photons, which are the smallest components of light energy, are absorbed by the body through cell membranes and into the mitochondria, which acts as the cell's power plant. The mitochondria create ATP, which drives cellular energy. Disease, aging and environmental factors all cause cellular energy to slow down, which means basic functioning and healing also take longer. But these photons work to re-regulate and even up-regulate the cell's ability to create ATP. And that the neat thing about low-level light therapy—there isn't just a re-regulation of ATP creation but an up-regulation. The metabolic and cellular effects are exponential as a result! Although LLLT is a non-invasive treatment, it affects cells on various levels. Starting from the skin surface, here are a few examples of cells that can be impacted by low-level light…
